image details

Description
These people are to be found in the Transvaal. Once living in Natal they emigrated over 200 years ago, probably away from the fierce and warlike Zulus, for they are a peaceable and friendly people. The women, besides a love of personal adornment, are noted for the artistic decoration of the walls of their mud-houses and courtyards which they paint with clays and ochres taken often from prehistoric deposits, using bold and intricate geometrical patterns in red and blue, yellow and black.
